Tai Chi in Yangshuo

Tai Chi in Yangshuo

I was in my early 60’s when the opportunity to learn Tai Chi came my way. I really had no idea what learning it would entail or the amazing benefits. I considered myself to be reasonably fit, but I soon found out there was another type of fitness.

Tai Chi involves quite slow movements. “How hard can that be,” I thought! For me, it was a challenge, but with a wonderful kind patient teacher, I gradually got the hang of it. But it was always a challenge for me to remember all the moves by myself.

My Master was Wu Heng Dong, (Kim) and I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to be his student and now he’s a very good friend.

One on-going comment was always about how good this was for my health. This became quite apparent to me as I continued to have classes many times a week. My flexibility and balance improved a lot. For mature age people, this is very important.

At that time Kim did not have his own school, but it was always his dream. He usually held lessons in Yangshuo Park which was always very pleasant, but no good during rainy times. He now has his own school in Yangshuo countryside so no more weather problems. His school is built in old traditional ways which is very fitting with an ancient art like Tai Chi.

Yangshuo provides a wonderful, memorable environment to learn Tai Chi in. If that interests you, contact Kim and make plans. You will not be disappointed. Kim has fluent English and teaches in English.

Chen’s Taijiquan Dantian internal skill—Kim

Taijiquan Dantian internal rotation qigong practice, put two palms on Qihai acupoint, male left palm inside right palm outside (female right palm inside left palm outside). Men rotate 36 times clockwise and 24 times anticlockwise, while women do the opposite. From small to large, from big to small, it turns into a breath (Yang) and a breath (Yin) into yin and Yang. Combined with 12 zodiac signs, it is a small circle, so each person is born with the same zodiac sign at 12 years old, which can also be called a small cycle. 36 cycles are positive in 3 cycles and 24 cycles are negative in 2 cycles. The total number of turns is 60, 60 years old (circle) is calculated as a lifetime according to our life cycle, 60 years old is the first circle of life, and after 61 years old is the second circle. Combined with the five elements of geomancy, namely, gold, wood, water, fire and earth, it is dissolved into the five internal organs of the human body: lung is gold, liver is wood, kidney is water, heart is fire, spleen is earth, lung, liver and heart in the five elements are Yang, kidney and spleen are yin. The sum of 12 zodiac signs and 5 elements is 60, so the rule of practicing Qi is from Wuji – Taiji – yin and Yang – four symbols – eight trigrams – five elements, from the beginning to the last dot, there is no beginning and no end. So I hope to practice and experience slowly, gather the Qi to Dantian, and it will move the whole body when Dantian is full. In combination with the inner and outer movements of Dantian, the inner and outer movements of Yiqi form a natural spherical body that rotates up, down, left and right – this is called the inner rotation of Dantian Qigong method.

Congenial Taiji

I am a person who pursues health, fashion and perfect quality of life. I also know the truth of “life lies in sports”. I am keen on sports. I feel uncomfortable without moving for a few days. I have tried all kinds of sports: yoga, badminton, tennis, rock climbing, mountain climbing, running, cycling At first, I thought it was good to release the passion of youth in running and hitting.
I’ve always had a problem of fighting with my hands. It seems that I’m nervous in front of outsiders. Actually, I don’t. Sometimes I feel that I wonder if I have any problems. Fortunately, I have a physical examination every year, and the physical examination report is normal. Some friends also said that maybe it should be Qi blocked. They suggested that I practice some Qigong and Taiji. Maybe that’s why I met Tai Chi. It’s a kind of love that we met later, and it will be the most beautiful encounter in the second half of our lives. “Taiji” refers to Taijiquan and related sports that ordinary people think. Because these two words seem simple, but their professional interpretation is quite complicated, and they are not able to explain to me at present. It has almost overcome the shortcomings of all the sports I have tried, and it has rich connotations and profound mysteries. All in all, it suits me.
Before I came into contact with Tai Chi, I had the same idea as most people, that people who practice Tai Chi are either old or ill, slow-moving and conservative. Once contacted, with the deepening of learning, with the broadening of vision, many views are subverted and many views are changed.
Now I know that Taiji is a dynamic sport. Although its external form is slow exercise, its internal spirit is aggressive and enterprising.
Beginners are always eager for success. They think that learning Taiji is nothing more than learning to dance slowly in the air with hands and feet, which is the boxing frame in the book. I am no exception, and I am very serious. Maybe it’s because I often stay up late that my memory drops. I study slowly. Every new routine I learn will be practiced repeatedly. Under the coach’s demonstration, I always imitate and speculate carefully. Up to now, I still can’t remember 74 Style Taijiquan very well. Fortunately, there are very patient coaches and students to help me. Sometimes when I practice, I break the chain. It’s common to be silly and laugh.
After a period of study, I have mastered the framework of some routines, and slowly found that it is one thing to remember actions, another thing to play well and play well, and the practice of basic skills is very important. Now the movement from rigid to soft, from intermittent to coherent, up and down coordination, left and right smooth. My heart is also full of a small sense of achievement, and I have initially tasted the fun of learning Tai Chi. Learn to know, Taiji so happy!
“The best way to exercise the leg strength is to stand on the stump”, which was repeatedly stressed by the coaches. Now I finally understand. Once you understand the truth, you will be willing to learn. Originally thought that the boring stand pile was gradually standing out of my feeling, standing out of the fun. When standing on the stake, the body seems to be motionless, but in fact, the blood is circulating rapidly, and the palm and body will gradually heat up.
This is the so-called “static in motion, static in motion”. It’s really “static without wonder, static without wonder”.
Since learning Tai Chi, I have been fascinated by the elegant Tai Chi suit. I lingered in the online Taiji clothing store and enjoyed various styles, fabrics and forms of Taiji products. I marvel at the richness of Taiji Culture and the greatness of wisdom of our ancestors. I can’t forget the excitement when I put on the Taiji suit for the first time.
The students who study Taijiquan in Yangshuo traditional taijischool are from all over the world. Although they come from different countries, every student is very kind and friendly. Everyone cares about and helps the students who have difficulties. Teachers and students love each other. They like this harmonious learning atmosphere very much. Love is boundless. It’s like our home.
I personally believe that Taiji is a choice of fashion and a healthy lifestyle.

What an amazing expeience!

I sadly was only able to stay for 1 week, but that week was transforming in many ways. The moment I arrived I immediately was greeted and treated like family. My room was remodeled and very nice. The tai chi teachers are very very skilled at what they do. This school made me realize you only get a taste of this practice in a week. It’s truly a practice which takes a lifetime of dedication, but it’s also inspired me to strive for that.

The school itself is tucked away in a village. So it’s very peaceful and beautiful! Town is only a 15-20min bike ride away. The food they served was absolutely delicious and authentic Chinese food.

I can’t wait to come back someday and stay for longer!

Great master who is ever willing to share his intimate knowledge of taichi to you. Master Kim provides a pleasant and warm environment to learn all about taichi, whatever level you are at.

Two-week Tai Chi intro

We just ended our two-week stay at the Yangshuo Traditional Tai Chi School. In all aspects it has a traditional feel, from the stone floors, brick walls, and spacious practice areas. The room was comfortable and the food delicious. Two weeks was enough time to grasp the depth of Tai Chi while taking away a few movements of the long, carefully correographed sequence. To master the entire 48 and 72 movements would take several months of dedicated practice. There is a no better place to do this than at this school with Master Kim in the tranquil outskirts of Yangshuo. Our experience was most excellent and I hope to get back soon for several months of intense training. Highly recommended for single or couples.

My Tai Chi Adventure!

I first learned of the Yangshuo Tai Chi School online in 2017 and decided to go for one month in 2018. I arrived at the school on September 29 of 2018 and after my first week I had decided that I wanted to stay longer. So, I signed up for another two months. Everyone here was warm and welcoming upon my arrival and continue to be very helpful with all of your needs and concerns. Kim is the Instructors here. They have over 30 years of experience between them. The level of instruction is excellent. Very detailed and precise. The instructors are all english speaking which helps tremendously. Beginners and experienced alike come through the school and stay from one week to a few months time. Some even come back from time to time for a refresher or just to catch up with old friends. That should give you a clue as to the quality you receive while here. Everyone I’ve met so far has been a pleasure to know. Kun and Zhuge are the cooks and care takers of the school. They are very nice people and quite fun to be around. The food here is a mix of vegetables, fish and meat with the occasional soup to go along with the rice. All quite wonderfully delicious. If you opt to reside at the school during your stay you will receive three square meals per day. The rooms are adequate. Some better than others but renovation has been going on to make the rooms as well as the entire school a more pleasurable experience during your stay. There is Wifi which works great for the most part with only a once in a great while of inadequacy. So if you have online business to complete, have no fear. As I said above, I opted to stay longer than my original one month previously planned. During that two months, I decided to stay for one years time and possibly longer. I am loving every minute of my experience here at the School. Yangshuo is a very beautiful place to visit as well as stay. The surrounding Karst mountains are a beautiful sight to see. There are several things to do whilst here which will keep your weekends busy if you wish to do so. I have always wanted to visit China to learn a martial art and now after all of these years my dream has come to fruition. I definitely recommend learning Tai Chi and Qi Gong. Yang is probably the most popular of the Styles in the West but I fell in love with Chen the moment I seen it performed and wanted to experience it first hand. Why be like all the rest when you can stand out on your own. I have not stopped enjoying myself since I have arrived here. So, if you have a similar desire, pack those bags and head on out to Yangshuo, China to the Yangshuo Traditional Tai Chi School. You won’t regret it! Cheers!

In this school, I feel like I’m in a Chinese kung fu movie! Decoration, room walls, people here put you in the Taiji atmosphere. The school where I work and many Chinese students come here, we all like it! I like to go there not only Taiji can enjoy a quiet moment!

Great learning experience.
After years of seeing the elderly playing Taiji in the park, I think I can’t miss such an opportunity to finally understand the basic common practice.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. This teacher is really wonderful. This place is located in a beautiful place.

I’m here learning taichi for three weeks, if I got the chance, would be more than happy to stay for 3 years! Master shifu is very helpful and his teaching style is also so much fun, living with the family and have the delicious traditional Chinese food with them, exactly feels like home!

Goodbye my Taichi trip. In past week I met some great people here, they are friendly and simply. I had wonderful experiences of Taichi with Master Kim, whom over 30 years experience in both Taichi and Qi Gong, obtaining a level 6 Taichi master…Thank Master Kim and his family for their hospitality, see you all in next time[微笑]
